Plessey Semiconductors & Plymouth City Council

Plessey Semiconductors are leading experts in the development and manufacture of semiconductor products used in sensing, measurement and control applications. Plessey designs products for high performance applications and its range of integrated products includes High Brightness LED lighting solutions, CMOS image sensors and its award-winning EPIC electric potential sensors.

Plymouth City Council is the unitary authority for Plymouth, Devon, managing council services for this city of 250,000 inhabitants in the South West of the UK.

I&G Systems consulted and project managed for both with Plessey Semiconductors and the City Council to demonstrate the effectiveness of LED lighting solutions in council buildings and develop the business case for a large scale roll out of LED lighting in the council's buildings. Services provided included:

  • Project Management of a pilot roll-out of LED lighting solutions the Council Offices of Douglass House, home of Plymouth's Children's Integrated Disability Service.
  • Subsequent assessment of quantitative and qualitative data and feedback from building users, which indicated that the vast majority of council staff were either satisfied or very satisfied with the outcomes of the project and the quality of lighting delivered, and would support the extension of the rollout to remaining council buildings. The pilot also demonstrated that the lighting solutions provided as part of the pilot generated utilitsed significantly less energy & carbon than previously, and should also reduce maintenance costs at the site due to increased produce lifespans.
  • Development of and LED Lighting Toolkit using council estates data and pilot feedback data to demonstrate the business case, capital costing requirements, and potential return on investment of LED lighting rollouts in council buildings.
  • Further analysis and market model development to support the rollout of LED street lighting on Plymouth City Council streets.
